Why Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology builds on the ability to control or manipulate at atomic scale. It involves research and technology development at 1 nm to 100nm range (nanoscale), and creates and uses structures that have novel properties because of their small size.
Traditional fast-acting drug delivery methods, whether oral, dermal or injectable, face several limitations. These include reduced potency from partial degradation, risks of toxicity or side effects from high dosing, and compliance issues due to administration discomfort. Moreover, conventional formulations often struggle with poor bioavailability due to factors like large particle size, instability in the formulation, and short half-life in the system—challenges that nanoparticle-based delivery systems are specifically designed to overcome.
The use of nanoparticles allows to change the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug without changing the active compound. With this, the release of the drugs is in a controlled manner and more efficient cells uptake, in addition to other benefits around cost and time to market.
